Sato Masakiyo fighting a difficult battle from the Taiheiki (太平記), "Chronicle of Great Peace), a historical 40-chapter epic from the 14th century romanticizing the period of Go-Daigo's accession to power in 1318, also known as the Nanboku-cho. The emperor Go-Daigo sought to rule over the shogun, which had wrested control of Japan from the imperial seat. The Taiheiki covers the series of battles starting from the betrayal of the Hojo clan by Takajui's (a minor vassal of the Kamakura shogunate's Hojo clan), Go-Daigo's fall and expulsion by Takajui in 1333, and his eventual return to Kyoto in 1338.
