"Kachō-e" prints or Kacho-ga (bird and flower prints) are Japanese woodblock prints portraying close-up studies of creatures and fauna. The genre was made famous by its close-ups of birds; however, it grew to include studies of other living animals, such as fish and insects. Kachō-e prints often contained creatures and fauna, becoming an audience favorite during the Edo period. Ukiyo-e artists sought to capture nature's beautiful colors and often conveyed a creature's character by its movements incorporated into their designs.
